Beginning the Obedience Training

Sometimes as pet owners we need to be less than loving, or so we think when it comes to obedience training. It breaks our hearts to have to discipline our dog. Those sad, puppy dog eyes stare up at us and we wind up caving in. The dog has our bluff. Puppy training is hard when all you want to do is love and be affectionate to the new family member. But, we have to remember that obedience training is absolutely essential to the well-being of, not only our canine companion, but the sanity of the household.

Pet training obedience begins the moment we acquire our new friend. Basic animal training starts with teaching the dog how to communicate its need to use the bathroom. A puppy is just like a toddler. It does not know what the rules are and we have to provide that obedience training. Puppy pads, dog training collars and a variety of other training methods are used to start it on the way to knowing where it is appropriate to use the bathroom.

One thing to remember when beginning obedience training is that it is going to take a lot of patience. This is especially true of the housebreaking. The puppy does not know how to hold its bladder. There will be accidents and it is your responsibility as a loving pet owner to know the difference between being authoritative and being abusive. If you spot the accident as soon as it happens, this is an ideal time to correct the puppy. Hours or days later the incident is forgotten by the animal so it does not know why it is being punished. You must be diligent.

If you have ever been to a shopping mall and witnessed a frustrated mother trying to drag her toddler through the store, you know what trying to train your puppy to a leash is like. They are unfamiliar with the collar and most certainly do not want to go where you want them to go. It is easier to give in and let the puppy do what it wants than it is to make them go in the direction you wish. This may be the easy way out but it will hurt the dog in the end. You must be the Alpha and teach the puppy what he or she must know.

Puppies are like small children. They learn at an amazing rate and can be extremely hard headed. You have to be patient and understanding yet also have a firm hand. If you find yourself caving in and not knowing which step to take next, consider finding some dog forums to find advice. Other pet owners have gone through the same frustrations and can help you out. Obedience training takes time but eventually it will work out.

Today's Tip On Dog Training

Most people know that anti-freeze is toxic but often give their pet chocolate and chicken bones, both of which are harmful to dogs. The tiniest piece of chocolate can begin a terrible pattern that might result in poisoning due to theobromine. Chicken bones splinter when bitten and can become lodged in a dog's mouth and windpipe resulting in choking. So in reality it is both human and dog behavior training.
